Maintaining Your GuttersA lot of Southeastern Wyoming homeowners clean their gutters each year to properly keep up their homes. What you might not realize is that most Southeastern Wyoming gutter systems should be cleaned 3-4 times a year. A general rule to follow is to clean your gutter system with every changing season. To begin with, one may wonder why cleaning gutters needs to occur so often. This is because each season trees go through a variety of cycles, each of which can congest your gutters. In the springtime, nearly all trees drop seedlings and dead twigs. Springtime is also the best time to inspect your gutters for any damages that may have happened during the winter months. In the summer, trees have a tendency to lose leaves from high winds and heavy storms. In the early fall, you should eliminate leaves that have fallen ahead of time to keep your gutters flowing freely. At the end of fall or early winter, you will want to ensure that everything has been properly cleared from the gutter system to help avoid ice dams or buildup of ice in your gutters. The weight of frozen water in your gutters can cause them to tear apart from the fascia and many times, fall from the house. Incorrect gutter maintenance will normally lead to blocked or gutter damage and can cost thousands of dollars in repairing the damage to your house. To clean your gutters correctly, use a well-built ladder and get a neighbor to lend you a hand. If you don't have a ladder, ask if you can borrow one from a neighbor, or maybe rent one from a local rental company for as little as $40.00 per day. When using ladders, make sure you steer clear of trees, power lines, and windows. It is a smart, safe idea to use a ladder stabilizer to make sure that the ladder does not dent or crush your gutters or slip while doing the cleaning. Keep in mind that your safety is more valuable than clean gutters, so make sure you get people to assist you. Many people die each year as a result of falls and electrocution while using and working on ladders. Make certain that gutter screens or guards are not damaged or congested with branches and leaves. They will not help to protect the gutters if the water can not get into them suitably and the water may only run over them making them useless, even if the gutters are clean. Elevate the guards to avoid damaging them and remove any leaves or debris under them and then reassemble them correctly. Water should then run over them to make sure they are working as they should. Check your downspouts to ensure that they have screens at the top and clear these as well. A hose can be used to remove any heavily clogged downspouts and take care to replace any damaged gutter or downspout screens. While you are cleaning your gutters, examine them to make sure all fasteners are adequately secured. This checkup can usually be accomplished with a hammer, or in some cases a screwdriver. You might find that over time, the spikes that hold the aluminum to the fascia board have loosened. You can either drive the loose spikes back into place with a hammer, or substitute them with longer ones for enhanced support. When gutters are loose, the pitch alters and the water flows over in areas that are low. While securing the fasteners, inspect your roof for shingles that may be missing, bare nails, or cracked vent pipe gaskets. |
