The first step in combating pest infestation is to find the source of the problem. Inspect the outside walls of your Eastern Shore home from the foundation to the roof and seal any cracks or holes that allow pests inside.

Gable vents are a familiar entry point for birds and bats. Place screening or 1/2 inch mesh hardware cloth over these vents either on the inside or the outside. Trim away any tree or shrub branches that are in the vicinity of or touch the house or the roof. If you've a wood-burning stove or fireplace, stack wood away from the house. These woodpiles are havens for insects and other creatures.

It is best to leave any bird or bat droppings untouched. If it is necessary to clean the area, moisten the droppings first so that they do not release dust into the air. If you must vacuum the area, make sure that HEPA filters are installed on your vacuum. Wear a respirator and use disposable gloves and take care to wash all your clothing in hot water afterwards.
