Bandero / Eagle Pass & Vicinity Gutter System Maintenance

On an average, most Bandero / Eagle Pass & Vicinity homeowners maintain their gutter systems only once a year as part of their general home maintainance. What is widely unknown however, is that the majority of Bandero / Eagle Pass & Vicinity gutters need to be cleaned 3-4 times a year. It is most useful to clean gutter systems upon the start of each new season. Some may wonder what the reason is for this frequency. To answer, it is because in the course of each new season, trees go through many cycles and during each cycle, there is a predisposition for gutters to become clogged or blocked. The majority of trees release their dead twigs and seedlings in the Spring. Spring is also the best time to survey for any damages that may have occurred within the winter months. In the summertime, trees are liable to lose leaves from harsh winds and severe storms. Leaves that fall early in the fall season should be removed to allow gutters the ability for water to flow freely through them. In early winter or towards the end of the fall season, leaves and other foreign material should be cleared from the gutter system to disallow the buildup of ice or ice barriers in gutter systems before winter comes. When ice is allowed to gather in the gutters, it could make it easy for gutters to pull away from the fascia and in many instances, actually fall from the house. Cleaning and maintenance of gutter systems that has not been done correctly will generally lead to gutters that are blocked or damage to them. When this happens, repairs can can be quite expensive.

In an effort to properly clean gutters, one should ask a neighbor or a friend for assistance and use a sturdy ladder. If one does not own a ladder, he/she should consider borrowing one from a neighbor or rent one from a local rental service. Most rental companies allow you to use them for as little as $40 a day. It is of the utmost importance that when using a ladder, that you steer clear of trees, windows, and electric lines. Using a ladder with a stabilizer is an intelligent decision so that the ladder doesn't cause your gutters to become dented or crushed or allow slippage when cleaning the gutters. It is also important that you bear in mind the importance of your safety over the cleanliness of your gutters, so ask your friends or neighbors to help you. Many injuries and even deaths occur each year due to falls and electrical shock when working on and using ladders.

Gutter Screens need to be checked in addition to the guards to ensure that there is no damage or they are not clogged with leaves, branches, or other foreign material. When screens are clogged, the guards won't safeguard the gutters if water is not able to enter properly and only runs over them. This renders the gutter system useless, even if the gutters are empty. Gutter guards should be raised to prevent damage to them, leaves or other debris can then be cleared underneath them. Following that, the guards should be reassembled. This will allow water to run over them and work as they should. Downspouts should also be checked to make sure they have screens or guards near the top. Remove debris from these downspouts as well. To clear heavily clogged downspouts, use a water hose. It is essential that damaged gutters and downspout screens are replaced right away. When cleaning gutters, every fastener should be checked to ensure they are properly secured. A hammer can normally be used to do this and in some cases a screwdriver can be used as well.

Over time, you may find that the attachments from the aluminum to the fascia board have loosened. A hammer is a good tool to use to either force the loose spikes where they belong or one should replace them with longer or stronger ones for added support. When gutters become loose, the pitch changes and water will tend to flow over where areas are lower. While in the process of attaching the fasteners, roof shingles should also be checked for any that are missing and also whether there are any bare nails, and if there are cracks in the gaskets surrounding the pipes.
